Palazzo Indipendenza

The authentic character of a historic palace, reimagined for a new way of living.

The illustrious past of Palazzo Indipendenza

In the heart of Piazza Indipendenza, one of the first 19th-century neighborhoods in Florence, a completely new space for its time was created: orderly, essential, and destined to become the center of important historical events.
The Trollope family, mother and eldest son, moved to Florence in 1843. But the most fruitful period of their residence was between 1850 and 1863, when they purchased and modernized the palace, which became known as Villino Trollope. The building, spread over three levels and characterized by a distinctive chamfer facing the square, showcases all the sophistication of the era. The interiors were adorned with marble columns, elaborate decorations, and precious objects, creating an environment of extraordinary elegance and charm.
During the 19th century, the residence became a gathering place for intellectuals and patriots. The Trollope family themselves actively participated in the uprising against the Grand Ducal government, contributing to the political fervor of those years.
A plaque, still visible today on Via Vincenzo Salvagnoli, commemorates Theodosia Garrow Trollope, a patriot who passed away in 1865. After her death, her husband Thomas Adolphus Trollope, a prominent writer, sold the house, marking the end of an era for the residence.
During the period of Florence as the capital (1865–1871), the palace hosted the embassies of the Netherlands and Portugal, further consolidating its prestige. In the following years, it was transformed into a renowned pensione, retaining the Trollope name and welcoming distinguished guests, including writer Thomas Hardy in 1887 and musician Ethelbert Woodridge Nevin in 1896.
Today, this symbol of history and culture is ready to rediscover its former glory through the Palazzo Indipendenza project, bringing the charm of an era back to life within an exclusive residential setting.
